Vermont’s visionary purveyors of psychedelic raga blues. One of the greatest groups of the 21st century so far with a back catalogue that makes The Fall look lazy. Truly unmissable.
HEATHER LEIGH (US/Scotland)
Former member of Charalambides and Taurpis Tula, half of Scorces, the co-founder of the legendary Volcanic Tongue record store and one of the most inventive pedal steel players of the century to date. Absolutely delighted to finally welcome her to Manchester.
MICHAEL FLOWER (UK)
A founder member of the hugely influential UK psychedelic drone group Vibracathedral Orchestra and more recently lauded across the globe for his blazing, raging duo with Chris Corsano, Michael Flower is one of the UK’s greatest living guitar players.
THE DOOZER (UK)
Droning monotonal guitar pop from Cambridge. Records on Woodsist and Siltbreeze. Utterly fantastic.
ACRID LACTATIONS (UK)
Legendary duo of Susan Fitzpatrick and Stuart Arnot who use traditional and found instruments to create spontaneous orgies of weirdness that recalls the very British greatness of Ivor Cutler. This year, they released one of what I feel is the most astonishing Brit weirdo albums (albeit on tape) of the past few years in collaboration with Joincey. The closest contemporary music I can compare it to is Good Area (KYE Records). AMAZING.
SAUCER WISDOM (Austria/UK)
A second punt at the collaboration between Nick Mitchell Chalaque/ Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura) and Ulrich Rois ( Bird People/ Feathered Coyote Records), which, last time, forged a Sandy Bullesque meander through sunshine daydream picking and droning over a single 25-min period. Psyched to give it a second blast.
IRMA VEP & THE ROYAL HOUSE OF BOO HOO HOO (UK)
The big band version of everyone’s favourite local loner/outsider bluesist features half the cast of Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura as well as other friends and veers into stoned, sun-scorched psychedelic folk territory akin to the more blasted, ‘Ragas of the Culvert’ style MV&EE releases.
Helmut Lemke is a lauded sound experimentor and grade-A fruitcake (high praise) who has, since moving to the North West of England, been making Greater Manchester a far more interesting place to live. His ‘work’ has seen him searching unsuccessfully for absolute silence, running wires across bodies of water to pick up vibrations and building a huge tape machine allowing for live sound collage. This Xmas, he’ll be reviving his Santa Claus act, growling anarchic calls to liberationist action like a German Howlin’ Wolf.
Free mince pie on entry.
